What I find interesting in his photographs is that very little seems to be happening. A road, a motel room, a shop, a meal, a parking lot. Nothing particularly remarkable, and yet the photographs make you stop and look.
I have always been interested in that kind of photography. Not necessarily in finding something extraordinary, but in paying attention to things that are usually overlooked.
Shore is one of those photographers who reminds me that the subject itself does not have to be spectacular. The way you look at it can be enough.
I don’t think about this as an influence in any direct sense. But looking at his work sometimes makes me look differently at my own photographs, especially when I am photographing ordinary places.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons I keep coming back to photography.
